If you’ve ever been to Black’s Beach in La Jolla, CA - you might have seen the infamous Mushroom House. It’s the most random structure you would expect to find on a beach, but it is surely intriguing. If you’re on this side of San Diego, this beach and the Mushroom House are a must-see.
WHERE?
The Mushroom House is located on the south-end of Black’s Beach. Black’s Beach has a private drive-up but is only accessible by residents of the ultra exclusive La Jolla Farms neighborhood. To get to this destination easily and quickly, drive to the entrance of the hike down, which is at the intersection of Blackgold Rd and La Jolla Farms Rd. There is usually parking on the north-end of Blackgold Rd. The graphic below breaks down where this journey begins.
Pass through the gate and follow the road down until you hit the beach. It’s not really a hike, but more of a descending walk (walking back up sucks), as the road is paved. Once you reach the beach, turn left and walk along the coast towards the south-end. You should be able to see the Mushroom House once you make the turn.
WHEN?
The best time to check out the Mushroom House is when there is low tide. Sometimes the Mushroom House is inaccessible as the water can cover the path along the coast. If this is the case, don't risk walking along the base of the cliff, as rocks may fall.
TIPS
- Bring a tent or beach chair. This area is so secluded, you can easily spend all day here.
- Be careful if you're flying a drone. Although it is permissible, helicopters and paragliders fly by often.
